The European Union and Immigration: A Mechanism of Socioeconomic Deregulation?

Abstract (English):
This This article examines European Union (EU) immigration policy through the lens of market integration and globalisation. It offers an interpretation of immigration’s role in the socioeconomic deregulation of Member States— one that challenges the widespread thesis that immigration primarily responds to pre-existing selected labour market characteristics such as job vacancies. This thesis fails to account for the vast surge in immigration flows since 2000. After introducing a theoretical framework, the article presents three hypotheses and a number of elements to start their discussion. It finally explores how immigration policies—and social policies more generally—might be re-sovereignised and re-democratised in the context of current geopolitical instability.
